It’s Mongolia today today, but at least some of their ancestors probably lived in the Altai in 3000 BCE, near Lake Baikal, where Déhawiha met Loukosyo Hokwi. Her descendant, Dêywiha, seems to have impressive horse skills. Do you think she would have been a good at archery too?
Yan and her husband Flo are riding again – this time heading into modern Hami. They took a different route across the Gobi Desert than Déywiha, who traveled along the southern rim of Dzungaria and passed through what became Hami on the way to Ga-Se. But Yan and Flo don’t have herds of cattle and horses to graze and water for weeks across the desert, either!

By the early 21st century, horse racing was no more in Illinois. But even today, there is no shortage of horse lovers, focused more on casual riding or dressage than racing.
